The karakumidai (car-a-coo-me-dye) is used for making twined braids constructed of diamond shapes. The shapes are called hishi (hee-she), the number of threads determine the number of diamonds.
The braid was developed during the Heian period (794 to 1192) and marked the creation of the first truly Japanese braids rather than reproductions of Chinese and Korean techniques that had been seen up to that time. A sash called hirao were made for imperial formal court occasions and ceremonial Bugaku and Shinto dance costumes, still seen today. The braids are very complicated to make, the central threads were sometimes of one color and the edges in other colors. Space dyeing was often used on the silk with embroidery further embellishing the sashes.
Today braiders enjoy the challenge of making these twined braids for their own use, at least one Japanese designer has made garments using this technique on a larger scale.
We are offering our karakumidai with short and long legs. The short legs allow you to put the karakumidai on a stool or stack of books to the height you wish, the long legs allow you to sit in a chair.
The top of the karakumidai is 13.75"/35cm square. The slant is perhaps a bit more extreme than the Japanese version in order to improve your vision when sitting at it. We use hard maple with a hand applied shellac finish, the long legs have a lap joint in them to facilitate travel, the whole dai is fastened with knock-down bolts so it is very easy to assemble and disassemble without worry that there will be any failure of the bolt and metal insert assembly.
The EZ Bobs in the photo have no weights in them but we offer them with 8.8g of weight. You may wish to make your own traditional hira-dama (flat bobbin), instructions come with the karakumidai.
