Ayatakedai

The stand-alone Ayatakedai (eye-yuh-talk-eh-dye) is used to create warp-twined bands similar to tablet-woven bands. If you already own a BraidersHand Takadai, an Ayatakedai unit can be added to the front of your stand, creating what is called an Ayatakadai.

Unlike a traditional Takadai, the Ayatakedai uses a separate double weft that runs perpendicular to the warp. Our Ayatakedai is designed so the weaver sits in a chair while working. A Japanese kneeling-style version is also available by special order; please contact us for details.

The Ayatakedai holds 10 hane (Japanese for “feathers,” the wooden pieces that extend from the front of the stand). Using the included two-tiered feathers, bands can be made with up to 60 tama. With optional three-tiered feathers, the Ayatakedai can accommodate up to 80 tama.

For English instructions on using the Ayatakedai, see Kumi Himo: The Essence of Japanese Braiding by Aiko Sakai and Makiko.
