Our large tama are 25% larger than our standard tama, providing additional capacity for thick yarns, ribbons, or long lengths of material.
Our tama are based on the shape of traditional Japanese tama. They hold a generous amount of thread and are shaped so they don't easily catch on one another. Made from hard maple, they are polished to a fine finish, sealed at both ends, and lightly coated with wax.
The 240-gram tama are designed for braids requiring substantially heavier tension and are particularly suited to the kakudai.
In Kumihimo: The Essence of Japanese Braiding, Aiko Sakai and Makiko Tada provide instructions for 30 kakudai braids. Fourteen use eight 240-gram tama, while the remaining sixteen use 12 to 16 100-gram tama. This is the only English-language kakudai instruction book we currently carry.
