The BraidersHand Ayatakedai add-on attaches to the front of your BraidersHand Takadai or Extended Takadai with a secure fastener system originally developed for conference booths, where equipment must be assembled and disassembled frequently. Two screws make it easy to convert your Takadai into an Ayatakadai while maintaining the strength and stability of the bolt-and-dowel pin assembly.
The add-on includes 10 two-tiered hane (hah-neh), Japanese for “feathers” (the wooden pieces that extend from the front of the stand). The included hane hold up to 60 tama and attach to the front of the Takadai or Extended Takadai.
Our Ayatakadai add-on includes its own sword, which is longer than the sword used for the Takadai. One-hundred-gram tama are traditionally used with the Ayatakedai.
The original Takadai/Ayatakedai combination was developed by Aiko Sakai, mother of Makiko Tada. Aiko Sakai coined the name Ayatakadai (eye-yuh-talk-uh-dye) to describe this piece of equipment.
Kumihimo: The Essence of Japanese Braiding by Aiko Sakai and Makiko Tada provides an excellent introduction to the Ayatakedai, including basic instructions and patterns for 20 braids. For those seeking additional patterns, Advanced Ayatakedai Braids by Aiko Sakai and Makiko Tada (currently out of print) includes 58 patterns.
