The core stand is designed by Rodrick Owen to facilitate making Andean core braids, as well as other braids made with a core. See Rodrick Owen’s Andean Sling Braids: New Designs for Textile Artists and Terry Newhouse Flynn’s Sling Braiding Traditions and Techniques for more information.
The overhead harness allows the braider to move the tama that form the core of the braid out of the way while the braid is being created. Tama move back and forth between the harness and the stand as required by the design.
The core stand works with both short and tall marudai. If you already own a 10"/25cm BraidersHand marudai, it will fit into the base; a 12"/30cm BraidersHand marudai will fit on top of the base. If your marudai is made by another manufacturer, it should fit in a similar manner.
(The core stand shown in the photo is a prototype using a long-legged marudai. The final version of the harness has hooks rather than notched arms. Marudai and tama are not included.)
